St Peregrine Prayer Novena
(Patron Saint Of Cancer)
St Peregrine Prayer Novena (Patron Saint Of Cancer)
St Peregrine (borned Peregrine Laziosi) is well known to Believers as “The Cancer Saint.” He was born in Forli, Italy in 1260s. At that time, Forli was governed by the Pope as part of the Papal States.
Peregrine’s father was highly loyal to a political faction that stood in open defiance to the Pope and his mother was loyal to the faith and the Pope. As he grew and matured, Peregrine sided more and more with his father.
As a young man, Peregrine led a rebellious and dissolute life and was very hostile to the Church.
St Peregrine Pivotal Moment
At that time, because of anti-papal political activity, the city was under the church penalty of interdict. This meant that Mass and the Sacraments could not be celebrated in the city.
St Philip Benizi, the Prior General of the Servants of Mary was sent to Forli to preach the reconciliation of the city and the removal of the penalty.
During a public gathering, Young Peregrine came out of a large croud to strike the visiting St Philip Benizi in the face. St Philip Benizi’s only reply was to offer the other cheek.
The moment of striking St Philip Benizi seemed to drastically change Young Peregrine. He could not forget the look in the holy priest’s eyes. It was a look of compassion, love and pardon.
This is when Young Peregrine’s whole life changed and took on a new meaning. He begged St Philip Benizi’s forgiveness, left aside his former way of life, and dedicated himself to prayer and solitude.
Vision Of Blessed Mother
During this time he developed a trusting and childlike confidence in the Blessed Mother. On one occasion, the Blessed Mother appeared to St Peregrine in a vision and urged him to go to Siena where he joined the Servants of Mary. Obeying, he devoted the remainder of his life to his faith and, as a priest in Forli, became known as the “Angel of Good Counsel.”
After Peregrine had been ordained a priest, he asked to return to Forli to work among his own people. His favourite places were the hospitals, the prisons and the homes of the poor.
He spent his days and nights visiting the sick and the dying, and comforting them by his presence, his words and his actions.
St Peregrine especially dedicated himself to a life of repentance, prayer and, whenever possible, helped the sick and the poor.
What Kind Of Cancer Did St Peregrine Have?
A life of poverty and penance eventually left its mark on the aging St Peregrine. St Peregrine had imposed a special penance on himself – to stand whenever it was not necessary to sit. At age 60 was diagnosed with cancer of the leg brought on by many years of disciplined prayer while standing, resulting in varicose veins which became ulcerous.
The sore was diagnosed as cancer. The wound became so obvious, odorous and painful, yet, he bore this suffering without complaint. To save his life, the doctors decided to amputate. Surgery was a great risk in those days.
Suddenly Peregrine was confronted with the ugliness and suffering of his own life. He had given himself to people in similar situations and then found he must lean on his own faith in the goodness of God.
At the age of 60, he was challenged to carry a new and more difficult cross.
The night before the surgery, Peregrine prayed His prayer led him into a deep trance-like sleep during which he envisioned the crucified Christ leaving the cross and touching his cancerous leg.
The night before the scheduled surgery, Peregrine spent hours in prayer before the image of the crucified Christ. Then he dozed off and dreamt that Christ was touching his cancerous leg and healing his foot.
The thrill of it woke him up.
In the dim moonlight St Peregrine saw that his foot, carefully bandaged a few hours earlier was completely and miracuously healed.

Why Is St Peregrine The Patron Saint Of Cancer?
The Forlineses appreciated him still more after learning of the miraculous cure.
The miraculous healing of St Peregrine spread far and wide over the years.
When Belivers were sick they appealed to his prayers. Some were cured when he whispered “Jesus” into their ears. The Church has since appointed him patron of persons with cancer, foot ailments, or any incurable disease.
St Peregrine lived another 20 years. After many more years of serving the sick and poor, he died from a fever on May 1, 1345, at 85. He was declared blessed by Pope Paul V in 1609, and he was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726.

Here are some of the prayers that you can pray on to invoke his intercession.

St Peregrine Prayer
Graciously hear the prayers which we present O God,
to you in honor of St Peregrine, your beloved servant
and patron of those suffering from cancer,
AIDS, or other life-threatening disease.
Grant that we may receive help in our needs
through the intercession of him
whose life was so pleasing to you.
Hear us in the name of Christ, our Lord.
Amen
Prayer For Yourself
St Peregrine,
whom Holy Mother Church has declared
Patron of those suffering from Cancer,
I confidently turn to you for help in my present sickness.
I beg your kind intercession.
Ask God to relieve me of this sickness,
if it be his Holy Will.
Plead with the Blessed Virgin Mary,
the Mother of Sorrows,
whom you loved so tenderly
and in union with whom you have suffered the pains of Cancer,
that she may help me
with her powerful prayers
and loving consolation.
But if it should be God’s Holy Will
that I bear this sickness,
obtain for me courage and strength
to accept these trails from the loving hand of God
with patience and resignation,
because he knows what is best
for the salvation of my soul.
St Peregrine,
be my friend and patron.
Help me to imitate you in accepting suffering,
and to unite myself with Jesus Crucified
and the Mother of Sorrows, as you did.
I offer my pains to God
with all the love of my heart,
for his glory and the salvation of souls,
especially my own.
Amen.
Prayer For Someone Who Is Ill
O great St Peregrine,
you have been called “The Mighty,”
“The Wonder-Worker,”
because of the numerous miracles
which you have obtained from God
for those who have had recourse to you.
For so many years you bore in your own flesh
this cancerous disease
that destroys the very fiber of our being,
and who had recourse to the source
of all grace when the power of man could do no more.
You were favored with the vision of Jesus
coming down from His Cross
to heal your affliction.
Ask of God and Our Lady,
the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you.
(Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick for whom you are praying)
Aided in this way by your powerful intercession,
we shall sing to God,
now and for all eternity,
a song of gratitude
for His great goodness and mercy.
Amen.

St Peregrine Prayer Novena (Patron Saint Of Cancer) Summary
The lesson of ST Peregrine’s life is not that God worked a miracle, but that a faithful, trustful servant placed himself, unconditionally, in the hands of our Lord.
Seek his intercession through St Peregrine prayer and novena.
This Patron Saint of Cancer’s trust in God can be a model for us in dealing with the pain, sickness and crosses of our lives.

The Saint Prayer Miracle was created to be a prayer circle for all believers who wish to pray for blessings and get daily devotionals from holy saints.
Saints didn’t live perfect lives, but they did learn how to lean on God, sow peace, and love others during their time on earth. We pray with the Saints as they desire to help us draw closer to God.
