St Michael Miracle Prayer
Pope Leo XIII wrote this prayer in 1884, after supposedly seeing a terrifying vision of a confrontation between Jesus and Satan. During this confrontation, he saw countless evil demons released from the depths of hell to fight against the church. Yet in the midst of this apocalyptic scene appeared Saint Michael, in his role as valiant warrior, casting the demons back into the depths of the pit once more.
For His Holiness Pope Leo, this was sufficient and incontrovertible proof of Saint Michael’s conquering powers. He added this prayer in 1886 to the Leonine Prayers, which he had directed to be said after Low Mass two years earlier.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
Defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
And do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
By the Divine Power of God,
Thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
Who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
