Saint Rita Prayer Novena (Patron Saint Of Impossible Cases)

Saint Rita is a very powerful intercessor, especially known for her help through difficult situations. She is one you can turn to when you are faced with a difficult problem.

When things seem insurmountable, say a St Rita prayer or novena might help. After all, St Rita is known as the “Saint of the Impossible.”

This amazing saint led an incredibly holy life despite the ceaseless challenges she faced in the course of her life. Let us dive right in to her story!

Saint Rita Early Age

Saint Rita was born Margherita (whose name means “pearl”) Lotti in Roccaporena, Italy in 1381.

It was said that on the day after her baptism, Rita was surrounded by a swarm of white bees, which went in and out of her infant mouth without hurting her. Rather than being alarmed, her parents took it as a sign that she would live a special life for God.

She was called “Rita” as a nickname, and she was drawn even from an early age to religious life. From her early youth, Rita visited the Augustinian nuns at
Cascia, and showed interest in a religious life.

At an early age, she begged her parents to allow her to enter a convent but was instead arranged to be married so that she would have safety and security, whether or not she was happy.

Reluctant Marriage

Young Rita became a wife and mother at only twelve years of age and her husband was a man of violent temper. Her parents betrothed her to Paolo Mancini, an ill-tempered, abusive individual.

Rita became a good wife and mother, but her husband was a man of violent temper. In anger, he often mistreated Rita verbally and physically. He taught their children his own evil ways and openly pursued other women.

Rita put up with Paolo’s abuses for eighteen years and tried to perform her duties faithfully and to pray and receive the sacraments frequently.

Paolo had many enemies in Cascia, including an entire family with which his family was engaged in a blood feud. Eventually, Rita’s influence over him eventually led him to be a better man. He even renounced a family feud between the Mancinis and Chiquis.

Unfortunately, the feud between the Mancini and Cascia family grew turbulent and one of Paolo’s allies betrayed and killed him.

Rita had been married to Paolo 18 years by then, and had two young sons.

Following her husband’s death, Rita gave his murderers a public pardon, but Paolo’s brother, Bernardo, was still angry and encouraged Rita’s two sons, Giovanni Antonio and Paulo Maria, to join the feud.

Wrathful Sons

Even though Rita publicly apologized and asked again for an end to the feud at her husband’s funeral, her sons were persuaded to live with their uncle at the family estate rather than Rita’s home. Under their uncle’s leadership, each boy became more and more like their father had been before Rita married him.

The culture at the time set the precedent that the two should be raised to get revenge on their father’s murderer, and despite Rita’s protests, the boys’ uncle raised them to do exactly that.

Rita was devastated by the way her sons were growing into mean-spirited men like her husband had first been.

Rita attempted to stop them, but both of her sons were determined to revenge their slain father. Rita prayed and begged God for an end to the cycle of killing and revenge, asking Him to take her sons before they lost their souls to the mortal sin of murder.

One year later, her prayers were answered when both of her sons fell prey to dysentery and died.

Doing The Impossible

Upon the deaths of her sons, Rita again felt the call to religious life.

Rita attempted to enter the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene in Cascia, but she was not allowed to join. There were sisters in the convent who were a part of the feuding family, and the sisters worried about their interactions.

Though Rita’s character and piety were recognized, they were worried that Rita being there after being part of such a terrible feud would give the convent a bad reputation despite her own good character.

The sisters then decided they would allow her to enter if she was able to get the two families to make peace once and for all.

Asking for the intervention of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, she managed to bring the warring factions together, not completely, but sufficiently that there was peace.

Also at that point in time, the bubonic plague had been spreading through Italy, and when Bernardo Mancini became infected, he finally abolished the feud with the Chiqui family.

Worn down by their losses and amazed at Rita’s strength and determination, the two families did finally decide once and for all to make peace.

Rita was finally admitted to the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalen at age 36.

It is said that she was transported into the monastery of Saint Magdalene through levitation at night by the three patron saints she appealed to.

Life Of Devotion

Prayer, fasting, penances of many kinds, and good works filled her days. She was admitted to the convent of the Augustinian nuns and began a life of perfect obedience and great charity.

She lived a peaceful, faith-filled life there for many years until she was 60.

Saint Rita had a great devotion to the Passion of Christ. “Please let me suffer like You, divine Savior,” she said one day, and in response to a prayer to suffer as Christ, she received a chronic head wound that appeared to have been caused by a crown of thorns.

The wound never healed, and she suffered from it for the rest of her life.

Confined to her bed the last four years of her life, eating little more than the Eucharist, teaching and directing the younger sisters.

The Rose In January

Rita grew progressively weaker as she grew older with tuberculosis.

A story goes that a cousin came to visit her four months before she passed. She asked the cousin to bring her a rose from her family home’s garden.

The cousin was skeptical of the task since it was January, and knew there was no hope of finding a flower. However, she found sprouted on an otherwise bare bush, was a single rose in bloom and brought it to Rita.

Rita believed it to be a sign of restoration and peace since it was a sign of spring that grew out of the cold ground under which her husband and sons had been buried after such tragedies.

She believed God had used her to bring about that peace.

Saint Rita passed away four months later, on May 22, 1457.

Patron Saint Of Impossible Cases

Following her death, she was buried at the basilica of Cascia, and was later discovered to be incorrupt. She appears as in a sound sleep and her body can be found today in the Saint Rita shrine at Cascia, and is still on display today.

Among the other areas, Rita is well-known as a patron of desperate, seemingly impossible causes and situations. This is because she has been involved in so many stages of life – wife, mother, widow, and nun, she buried her family, helped bring peace to her city, saw her dreams denied and fulfilled – and never lost her faith in God, or her desire to be with Him.

The virtues that made St Rita particularly pleasing to God were love of neighbor and devotion to Jesus Christ Crucified. These two virtues contain all the wisdom of Believers which God asks of us all.

St Rita Prayer

Saint Rita is the patron saint of impossible cases. So, what is an impossible case? The answer is up to each of us: it might be a great suffering, a situation that seems hopeless.

Nevertheless, it is important to be able to step back and to put things in perspective when addressing some situations. Prayer can help us do so. Entrust your life to God’s hands and hold onto hope!

These prayers are just examples of what we can ask Saint Rita.

A prayer, to be beautiful, needs only two things:

  1. to come from the heart and
  2. to be recited with fervor.

Let us not forget to address our gratitude to God for answering our prayers, and to thank Saint Rita for her intercession.

Saint Rita,
you know the troubles of a difficult marriage:
for years you suffered
from the violent outbursts of your husband,
and yet you remained faithful, patient, and kind.

and he committed to his role
as a good spouse and good father.

Obtain for them the strength and courage
to live together in peace, love and fidelity.
