St Anthony Prayer For Lost Things

St Anthony Prayer For Lost Things

Yes, it’s true! St Anthony prayer for lost things is legendary.

Millions of people claim that God always heard them when they asked for St Antony’s intercession. With his intercession, God has mercy on a man in trouble, helping to find lost things.

St Antony is more than a patron saint for lost things or items. He is also a preacher, teacher and servant. St Antony is also called upon in critical situations where a person seems to have “lost his soul”.

Patron Saint Of Lost Things

Believers invoke St Anthony as the patron saint of lost items

St Anthony was born as Ferdinand, in the city of Lisbon, Portugal around the year 1195. His family was wealthy, but he decided to give up that future by entering into an Abbey school to study Latin and theology.

He became a priest there, and his main job was to be the hospitality for the Abbey. However, soon after, bodies of Franciscan martyrs were returned home to Portugal.

After witnessing the procession, he decided he wanted to join the Franciscan brothers instead and go to preach in Morocco. He joined and took the name Anthony.

Unexpected Orator

In 1222, at a special dinner, Anthony was called on to speak since no one else had prepared anything.

All in attendance were amazed at Anthony’s eloquent preaching, including St Francis, who immediately granted him permission to begin teaching others in an official capacity.

One source states, “He poured forth brilliant and burning words, a flood of divine eloquence.”

Not only had Francis succeeded in delivering a sermon of exceptional understanding and depth with no preparation – but he had done so in a winsome, engaging oratory style.

St Anthony Begins Preaching Mission

With St Francis’ blessing, Anthony started a highly effective preaching mission, often speaking in outdoor settings, without using notes.

He also did not focus on telling people who followed heretical teachings that they were wrong, but instead just told them about the wonder he had experienced with his own faith.

His persuasive style convinced many people to turn away from their sin, to forgive their enemies, and live more pious lives. Those in government enacted measures against usury, drunks became sober, and criminals turned from lawlessness.

It was said that he used common, plain words so that anyone could understand despite any lack of education.

People also listened to him because unlike most other preachers and religious life at the time, he had given up all his riches and possessions to live more like the people he spoke to everyday.

Anthony soon became a well-known speaker and he took as many as 400 trips to teach and to preach around Italy and France.

End Of Life

Anthony’s mission first took him to Italy, and then to France, where he later developed dropsy. He asked to return to Padua, the city he loved. Unfortunately passed while on the way there, however, and was only 36 years old.

He was canonized only a year after his death and later declared a Doctor of the Church.

Image Of St Antony With Child Jesus

It is interesting to note that, although Anthony has been frequently portrayed in art since his death in 1231, images of him with the Child Jesus did not become popular until later in the seventeenth century.

Since, the image of Anthony and the child Jesus is a favourite around the globe. The popular depiction highlights a unique mystical experience Anthony had during his life.

This experience was witnessed by a benefactor who gave the St Anthony a place to stay for the night. Here is one version of the story narrated in The Life of St Anthony published in 1895:

“He (the benefactor) saw Anthony kneeling, as if in ecstasy, and, full of wonder, admiring and caressing a loving child of rare beauty, who was tenderly embracing the saint. Then the man knew, from the affectionate conversation, and from the superhuman beauty, that it was Jesus Christ who, under the appearance of a loving child, was pleased to visit His faithful servant and fill him with His ineffable consolation.”

The image of Anthony holding the Divine Infant is a symbol and model for each of us. The image inspires us to go through life clinging to the wonderful mystery of the humble, self-emptying Christ, who accompanies us as a servant of our humanity and of the world’s healing.

Why Is St Anthony The Saint Of Lost Things?

His patronage as a “finder of lost things” comes from a story about a student he was teaching leaving the order and taking Anthony’s book with him.

Anthony prayed for the return of the book (which had all his notes and lessons in it). The student did return it, and re-entered the order as well.

On another occasion, a little boy appeared in the town square, apparently lost.

St Anthony picked him up and carried him around town looking for the boy’s family. They went to house after house, but no one claimed him.

At the end of the day, Anthony approached the friary chapel and the boy said, “I live there.”

Once in the oratory, the child disappeared! It was later discerned that the child was in fact Jesus.

Since then, believers invoke St Anthony as the patron saint of lost items whenever they lose something, even car keys or eyeglasses. At some critical situations where a person seems to have “lost his soul”, people do seek St Anthony’s intercession and guidance to regain clarity and wisdom.

What Is The Prayer For Lost Items?

Saint Anthony,
perfect imitator of Jesus,
who received from God
the special power of restoring lost things,
grant that I may find
(mention your petition)
which has been lost.

At least restore to me
peace and tranquillity of mind,
the loss of which has afflicted me
even more than my material loss.

To this favour I ask another of you:
that I may always remain in possession
of the true good that is God.

Let me rather lose all things than lose God, my supreme good.
Let me never suffer the loss of my greatest treasure,
eternal life with God.

Amen.

Grant that we may always be able to find
those things which we lose,
and if not possible,
to find the peace and joy that comes from God.

Grant us simplicity and mindfulness like yours.
Grant us the ability to forgive ourselves
and others for our losses.

Please grant us these things
despite any material or worldly losses,
that we may have peace of mind.

Amen.
