St Dymphna Prayer Novena (Patron Saint Of Mental Illness)

St Dymphna prayer and novena are said to be a great help not just to the mentally ill but, indeed, to anyone experiencing anxieties in these troubled times! She is well known as a patron of mental illness and there are many miracles have taken place at her shrine, built on the spot where she was buried in Gheel, Belgium.

So who is this patron of those suffering from nervous and mental afflictions? Read on to find the story of this teenage legend!

Birth Of St Dymphna

St Dymphna was born in Ireland sometime in the 7th century to a royal pagan father with great wealth and power. Her mother was a very beautiful and devout believer of God and raised young Dymphna to be a Believer in secret.

By the time she was 14, young Dymphna had decided she wanted to live a celibate life for her faith.

Horrific Proposal

Young Dymphna was fourteen when her mother died. Her father, Damon, had loved his wife dearly. The royal widower’s heart remained beyond reach of comfort and his moody silences pushed him on the verge of mental collapse. Soon after her death, he was afflicted with a mental illness brought on by his grief.

Damon’s courtiers suggested he consider a second marriage. The king agreed, but only on the terms that the woman was as beautiful as his wife had been.

His envoys went far a field in search of the woman he desired. The quest proved fruitless. Then one of them had an outrageous idea: Why shouldn’t the king marry his daughter, the living likeness of her mother?

Repelled at first, the king then agreed. He broached the topic to his daughter.

Dymphna, appalled, stood firm as a rock. “Definitely not.” By the advice of St Gerebern, her confessor, she eventually fled from home to avoid the danger of her refusal.

Fled But Found

Young Dymphna fled from her castle together with St Gerebern, the court jester and his wife.

The group of four set out across the sea. On landing at Antwerp, on the coast of Belgium, they looked around for a residence. In the little village of Gheel, they settled near a shrine dedicated to St Martin of Tours.

Young Dymphna was happy for a time as she used her wealth to care for the impoverished and sick people of the town. Her generosity, including building a hospice, proved to be her end sadly.

Then spies from her native land arrived in Gheel and paid their inn fees with coins similar to those Dymphna had often handed to the innkeeper. Unaware that the men were spies, he innocently revealed to them where she lived.

The king came at once to Gheel for the final, tragic encounter. Despite his inner fury, he managed to control his anger. Again Damon coaxed, pleased, made glowing promises of money and prestige.

When this approach failed, he tried threats and insults; but these too left young Dymphna unmoved. She would rather die than break the vow of virginity she had made with her confessor’s approval.

In his fury, the king ordered his men to kill St Gerebern and Dymphna. They killed the priest but could not harm the young princess.

The king then leaped from his seat and with his own weapon cut off his daughter’s head. Dymphna fell at his feet.

She was then only fifteen years of age.

Crown Of Martyrdom

Dymphna received the crown of martyrdom in defense of her purity about the year 620.

In the town of Gheel, in the Flemish-speaking region of Belgium, great honor is paid to St Dymphna. Members of the town who had grown to love her buried the bodies in a nearby cave until a church was built there.

She is the patron of those suffering from nervous and mental afflictions. Many miracles have taken place at her shrine, built on the spot where she was buried in Gheel, Belgium.

Gheel has long been known as a place of pilgrimage for persons seeking relief or nervous or emotional distresses and mental illness. The town still welcomes pilgrims into their homes today.

you graciously chose St Dymphna
as patroness of those afflicted
with mental and nervous disorders.

She is thus an inspiration
and a symbol of charity
to the thousands who ask her intercession.

Please grant, Lord,
through the prayers of this pure youthful martyr,
relief and consolation to all suffering such trials,
and especially those for whom we pray.

(Mention those for whom you wish to pray).

We beg you, Lord,
to hear the prayers of St Dymphna on our behalf.

Grant all those for whom we pray
patience in their sufferings
and resignation to your divine will.

Please fill them with hope,
and grant them the relief
and cure they so much desire.

We ask this through Christ our Lord
who suffered agony in the garden.

Amen.

I turn to you,
dear virgin and martyr,
confident of your power with God
and of your willingness
to take my cause into your hands.

I praise and bless the Lord for giving you to us
as patron of the nervous and emotionally disturbed.

I firmly hope that
through your kind intercession
He will restore my lost serenity
and peace of mind.

May He speak to my heart
and reassure me:
“My peace I give you.
Let not your heart be troubled
nor let it be afraid.”

Pray for me, dear St Dymphna,
that my nervous and emotional turmoil may cease,
and that I may again know
serenity and personal peace.

Amen.

St Dymphna Prayer: In Physical Illness

I appeal to you in my illness,
dear St Dymphna.

I would be so grateful
for a total and happy recovery,
for the blessed gift of health
in every fiber of my being.

May the Lord Jesus,
who mercifully healed the sick during His earthly days,
have pity on me and make me well again.

Ask Him to command sickness to depart
and grant me a full measure of health,
that I may rejoice in giving Him glory and praise.

Amen.

For A Strong Faith

To you, dear St. Dymphna
who have completed your pilgrimage of faith
and now dwell with the Lord forever,
I appeal for the blessing of a strong and mature faith.

May I preserve in my baptismal promises to Christ,
no matter what the cost.
May I conduct myself now
and always as a true believer
in the eternal truths God has revealed.

Help me always with your prayers
as I walk in faith toward the reward promised
to those who, without having seen Christ,
yet love Him and believe in Him.

Amen.

For Relatives And Friends

I humbly request you,
dear virgin and martyr Dymphna,
to take under your protection
all who are bound to me
by ties of blood or friendship.

May all the lives which touch mine
experience the blessings God is pleased
to grant through your intercession.

I now commend to your prayers
all the intentions of all my relatives and friends.
Remember also those persons
who have asked me to pray for them.
Pray especially for the lonely
and forsaken who have no one to pray for them.

Thank you, dear St Dymphna,
for remembering us all before our God and Savior.

Amen.

as the price of the Blood of Jesus
and as co-heir of heaven,
be pleased to help us by Thy powerful grace,
that we may faithfully fulfill
the two great commandments of charity not only in word,
