Story Of St Therese

The Birth Of Therese
Francoise-Marie Therese was born to parents Louis and Zelie Martin in France. Both her parents were very devout Believers who had separately considered joining religious life before they met each other.
Louis was a watchmaker and Zelie a lace maker with her own business that soon became so profitable that Louis left his job and went into business with her. The two had 9 children, 3 of which did not survive infancy and one that passed at age 5. Of the surviving five daughters, Therese was the youngest, and born on January 2, 1873.
Therese Early Childhood
When Therese was 4, and her mother passed away of breast cancer. Though Louis had spent most of his life in the region they lived, he moved the family to Lisieux where his brother-in-law’s family lived. He sold the lace business and bought a home for the family.
Therese began school when she was 8, and though she did relatively well in class, she was bullied because she was very emotional and sensitive. She would often hide and cry, clinging to her closest sister, Celine.
To make matters worse, her oldest sister Pauline who had become a “second mother” to her, entered a monastery as a cloistered nun, so she would never be able to return to the family.
Therese was devastated, and soon suffered panic and anxiety attacks, as well as many illnesses. Around age 9, she became ill with no working treatment. Young Therese prayed for a cure to her illness. She had a vision that a statue of St Mary had smiled at her, and was healed.
She wrote, “Mary’s face radiated kindness and love.”
Her inclination towards religious life grew even more fervent after this healing, though she was still so young. She hungered to grow closer to Christ.
Therese’s Determination
By age 13, two of her old sisters had already entered the Carmelite monastery in Lisieux, and St Therese longed to be there with them.
The order normally made girls wait until they were 16 before entering the convent or monastery, but Therese was adamant.
She accompanied her father to a general papal audience of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII and surprised everyone by throwing herself before the pontiff, begging to become a Carmelite.
The wise pope replied, “Go, go, you will enter if God wills it.”
Sister Therese The Carmelite Nun
On September 8, 1890, Therese took her final vows and entered the Carmelite monastery in Lisieux, at age 15. There, she was reunited with her sisters and a cousin.
Therese described that it brought her much peace and she grew in peace, humility, and love. She showed remarkable spiritual insights for someone so young, but it was due to her childlike relationship with Jesus. Her superiors asked her to keep memoirs of her thoughts and experiences.
Discovery Of “The Little Way”

Therese was aware of her littleness.
“It is impossible for me to grow up, so I must bear with myself such as I am with all my imperfections. But I want to seek out a means of going to heaven by a little way, a way that is very straight, very short and totally new.”
That was when she discovered what later became known as her “Little Way” towards Christ. Therese expressed her “little way” through a commitment to hard work and striving towards saintliness, giving when difficult, and going out of her way to befriend those sisters whom she found the least agreeable.
The “little way” merely gave her less reason to fear God, and all the more reason to love Him. It allowed her to be certain of God’s unconditional love for her, but she also knew that unconditional love was no reason to try to test the limits.
As a child of God, Therese knew that He would love her no matter what, but it was still her duty to be a loving and respectful daughter to Him.
Therese treasured the “precious gifts” of small sufferings that God handed out in every day living to teach her humility, patience and generosity. When her meditation was interrupted daily by the noise of a fidgeting nun, instead of showing her annoyance she focused her meditations upon the noise, offering it as a symphony to God Himself.
When another nun at the wash house, purely by accident, repeatedly splashed her with dirty water, Therese did not recoil and dry herself off, but left the sister unaware of her fault and cherished every drop, even seeking to work next to the same nun in the future.
Therese basically devoted her life to spiritual simplicity and focused on loving God.
Death and Legacy Of St Therese
On Good Friday of 1896, Therese coughed up blood for the first time and discovered she had tuberculosis. Though she tried to hide it from the other Sisters, she became so sick that it was obvious, and she even had to pass up a missionary trip she had been invited on despite the fact that it was something she had always longed to do.
Therese was in incredible pain for over a year, but took the time and energy to write down all her ideas and thoughts on her spirituality, encouraged by her sisters to do so.
The Story of a Soul was written during the months preceding her death. She passed away in 1897, praising God up until her last moment on earth.
Therese was canonized after many people found her writing to be inspiring, and later was declared a Doctor of the Church. A doctor of the Church is a Saint whose writings and teachings are recognized by the Church to have contributed greatly to the Faith.
In addition, her parents became the first and only couple to be canonized together, and her sister Leonie is in the process of canonization, currently a Servant of God.
